How and what we feed our children is a huge nutritional decision, especially when we’re making the transition from breastmilk to baby food. But where do you start and what’s good enough for baby?

This week on Let’sChat! we sit down with Stephanie Looi, co-founder and COO of PurelyB to give us some tips on the best ways to transition onto solids including some healthy homemade food ideas for your family. 

Carine Asks:

When should I start my 4-month-old son on solids? And where do I go to buy healthy baby food? Is baby food from the store the best way to go? What do you feed babies??

Carine, with all the information out on the web it’s easy to get confused by it all! Let’s take it step by step.

 

Look For Signs Of Readiness

Is your baby reaching out for your food? Does he seem interested in what you are eating? If so, then perhaps he is ready for solids. Keep in mind, a breastfed baby’s digestive system may take longer to develop.

If your baby is breastfed try starting them at about 6 months of age just to make sure that their digestive system is in place. For formula-fed babies, they may be ready at 4 months.

Ease In The Process

Start easing the process of introducing solid foods by feeding your baby with soft foods like avocado or banana — bananas are my favourite, so easy to find everywhere in Asia! Mash the fruits up and then mix it with some milk, be it formula or breast milk.

Also, be sure to sure look out for any signs of allergies so you know what to avoid.

 

Make Your Own Baby Food

An easy way to transition more into baby food is to make your own homemade purees. For harder foods like apple and pumpkin, chop up them up into smaller pieces, steam them and blend them — easy as that! Be creative, add in vegetables like spinach too.

Top Tip: Invest in a really good blender. A good blender will go a long way, and will make your life so much easier!

For softer fruits like papaya, all you need to do is mash them up. After you’ve eased your baby into eating soft foods, he’s ready to move on to your porridge, millet and quinoa. You can add in the blended foods to any of these bases and your baby is good to go!

Note: If your baby is 4 months, then sieving your pureed food will help achieve a smoother texture. If your baby is 6 months, blending alone is perfectly fine.

How To Store Baby Food

A simple trick to store your homemade purees is to put them in ice cube trays and then freeze it. Once the cubes have frozen you can just add them into your porridge, oats or millet whenever needed. Perfect for days when time is not on your side!

We're In Asia, Porridge Is Everywhere!

The blessing of living in Asia is that porridge is readily available. So if you don’t have time to cook a baby meal, don’t sweat it. Being in Asia means there are many restaurants that serve porridge. All you have to do is ask the restaurant for plain porridge and you can just add in puree cubes after!

 

But If You're Really Pressed For Time...

Don’t panic! If you really don’t have the time to prepare food beforehand, or can’t seem to find porridge, pack blended baby rolled oats. Simply mix the oats with milk or water and you’re good to go!

Homemade baby food is quick to make, it’s easy, and saves money. It also means you know exactly what you’re feeding your baby!
