PurelyB’s Co-Founder Stephanie’s Sound Healing Journey

Earlier on, we wrote about sound healing that gave an interesting insight that the practice of sound healing or sound bath has been utilised as a tool for healing around the world by many cultures. Whether in Malaysia and Indonesia, Tibet or Nepal where the famous Himalayan singing bowls originate, the practice dates back to over 3,000 years ago to the Bronze Age. Sound healing has also been popular in ancient Greece, South America, and Egypt.

Why is it so popular you may ask? Well bioenergetician Fabian Manan discovered in the early 80s that vibrations can transform the human cell structure; this means that certain forms of sound therapy can promote damaged DNA strands to self-repair. Today, sound healing takes more commonly a therapeutic form and participants enjoy alleviated levels of anxiety, insomnia and also have their endorphins and melatonin triggered (to name just a few benefits). 

Our very own co-founder Stephanie had her own journey with Sound Healing in Goa, India earlier last year.


We caught up with Steph to ask her about her experience:


Q: Why did you pick sound healing as a therapy to dive deep within?

A: As a certified Bach Flower Remedy Practitioner (alternative or complementary treatment that is used for emotional problems and pain), I wanted to add on something scientifically proven -  Sound Therapy, into my practice. Healing with sound is believed to date back to ancient Greece, when music was used in an attempt to cure mental disorders. More recently, research has linked music to a number of health benefits, from boosting immune function and lowering stress levels to improving the health of premature babies.


Q: Why did you pick Goa in India for your sound healing adventure?

A: There was no specific reason. I know i wanted to specialise into the Tibetan Singing Bowls / Himalayan Bowls. Tibetan Bowls has been around for centuries old, besides their traditional use for meditation, Tibetan singing bowls are used for deep relaxation and muscle regeneration, to relieve pain in the joints, muscles and shoulders, to ease pain related to sciatica, the digestive system, headaches and migraine or spine injuries, to improve circulation, release tensions and more. So, I was deciding between Nepal and India. When i did further research, my heart was more drawn to this particular school in Goa, and after a few emails with the Guru/Teacher, I felt a deeper connection with him. I would think that the decision came naturally. When it feels right, you would know it.

Q: When & what was your first experience with sound healing?

A: My first sound bath experience was in Ohanajo about 2 years ago. I attended the session without any expectations. During the session, I had a few experiences. It felt good at the beginning, but throughout the session, I had a very bad headache, and it almost felt like my head was going to burst. I didn’t thoroughly enjoy it. In fact after the session, I told the sound therapist Jojo about what I was feeling, and she said I had some “blockages” and insisted that I come back for more sessions. I didn't because I was terrified.. Another year went by, and I was working on a collaboration with Ohanajo. Jojo insisted that I attend a sound healing session again. I was hesitant, but I decided to give it another try and wow! I must say this time around it was the best feeling ever. I had such a good session, it was relaxing and I could feel my body falling into theta mode. That night I slept so well, I couldn't wake up in the morning. And I could feel that my body was craving for more sleep. And that was what I needed most - to rest. And to think back, my first sound bath wasn’t going great because I had some challenges I was facing during that point in time, but I was not addressing them. If I had actually gone back for a few more sessions, things would have probably improved for me. When I did go back a year later though, I was in a better state of mind and open to a lot more opportunities. Hence it went really well. This is why I practice now, I have always told my students that you will only be able to receive it if you open your heart and mind to it.


Q: How has sound healing helped you personally?

A: Besides having much better sleep, it helps me meditate, calms down my busy mind, I also find it most fulfilling to help others. Sound healing has helped my students/patients to feel better, whether they have a broken leg, multiple sclerosis, or cancer, because it puts them in a calmer state of mind that will promote better healing.

Below is a special sound bath session dedicated specifically to help boost our immunity especially during this pandemic period. I have activated the heart chakra bowl; which is connected to the thymus gland and can regulate the immune system. Sacral Chakra; connected to the adrenal glands and can help in the control of metabolism and the immune system

and Solar Plexus Chakra; connected to the pancreatic gland and can as well control metabolism.
