Female infertility is a common gynaecological issue. There are many causes for female infertility.  Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory places the main emphasis on the balance of the inner body and its connection with the external world. Irregular periods or premenstrual syndrome indicate Qi stagnation; dysmenorrhea indicates blood stasis or exogenous cold in the uterus; amenorrhea or light, scanty periods confirm blood deficiency; and obesity involves stagnation of phlegm and dampness. All these cause difficulty for women who are trying to conceive. However, some herbs may help to regain an absent or abnormal  menstrual cycle, while also aiding the body in regulating hormones,  and promoting ovulation. Having a regular menses cycle and healthy body makes it much easier to conceive.

Here are some simple recipes which may help to balance energy in the female body, hence, increasing the chances of conceiving.

Brown Sugar Ginger Red Dates Tea 


  • 250g brown sugar   
  • 150g ginger (peeled and bruised) 
  • 12 – 15 red dates 
  • 750ml water


  1. Slice the ginger thinly.
  2. In a deep saucepan or a pot, add in water, sliced ginger, brown sugar and red dates.
  3. Keep the fire medium to low, keep on boiling for around 30-40 minutes. 

The tea is better consumed on the second day after the menses stop; continue taking for seven consecutive days. You should take this on an empty stomach.

Purpose :

Reduces menstrual cramps, improves blood circulation, replenishing the Qi and nourishing the blood.

Note: Not advised for people who are experiencing fever, inflammation or heatiness.


Wolfberries Red Dates Egg Soup


  • ½ cup wolfberries
  • 2 eggs
  • 8 red dates (pitted)
  • 2-3 tbs brown sugar


  1. Wash the eggs and wolfberries with clean water and set aside for use. 
  2. Add water into a pot, put in the eggs and red dates to cook.
  3. Cook the eggs and red dates for 10 minutes.
  4. Take out the eggs and put it into cold water for a while.  Peel off the egg shell, and put the peeled eggs back into the pot.  Add in brown sugar, cook for a while and it’s ready to be served.


Enriches the blood, removes the heatiness in our liver and improves eye sight .

Note: People who are having a fever, inflammation or diarrhoea should avoid this. People who are weak or with poor immune systems are advised to take the above. 
Herbal Black Chicken Soup

Herbal Black Chicken Soup


  • 150g black beans 
  • 1 whole black chicken
  • 10 pieces red dates (pitted)
  • 100g He Shou Wu (Polygonum) 
  • 5g ginger 


  1. 1 black-skinned chickens, head and feet discarded, cleaned and rinsed.  Chop into 4 large pieces.
  2. Pan fry the black beans until the bean skin comes off.  When the beans have cooled, rinse them with water, and then set aside to dry.
  3. Slice the ginger into thin pieces. Fill a medium pot with water and bring to a boil on high heat. When the water is boiled, add in the black beans, chicken, red dates, He Shou Wu and ginger. 
  4. Reduce heat to medium and continue to cook for 3 hours.
  5. Add salt to taste, and serve.


To boost blood circulation, nourishing the liver and kidney, invigorating spleen and replenishing Qi.

Note: Not advisable for people who are having a fever, inflammation or heatiness.

Braised American Ginseng Red Dates and Snakehead Fish Soup


  • 15g American ginseng
  •  500g Snakehead fish
  •  10 pieces red dates (pitted)
  •  1 piece(5g) ginger (sliced)
  •  Salt, to taste


Put the ginseng, dates and ginger into a clay pot,  and add some water into the pot.  The water should come barely halfway up to the fish.  Turn on to high heat to boil the water. Once the water is boiled, place the fish into the pot. Reduce heat to medium and simmer for 3 hours. Adjust salt according to taste, and the soup is ready to be served.


Nourishing the Qi and blood.  Good for people who are feeling lethargic, fatigued and weak especially for those who lack rest.

Above are some remedies generally for people under sub-health conditions.  For serious health problems, you are advised not to simply take herbal remedies while trying to conceive unless they have been prescribed by a qualified Chinese Physician.
