Kids are a ball of movement and fun and they tend to have a lot of energy that they need to expel in some form or another. And what’s a better way than with some fun gross motor activities that get them up and moving?
Listed below are some fun activities that you can do with your little ones.
Tic Tac Toss
Tic-tac-toss is a fun and creative way to get the little ones to move about and to practice their aiming skills using only two items – masking tape and little bean bags!
Use the masking tape to tape the floors like you would in a game of tic-tac-toe. Instead of using x`s and o`s, in this game we use two different colors of bean bags. The aim is to throw the bean bags into the marked squares in a straight line.
This simple and inexpensive balloon tennis game also uses only two essential items – fly swatters and a bag of colourful balloons.
Blow the balloons and start swatting them! This activity will definitely get everyone up and about chasing the balloons. Just a reminder to keep the play area safe - no sharp, pointy or breakable objects.
I love this activity as it teaches the little ones to stretch with simple poses which increases their strength and flexibility and it keeps them calm and motivated.
Show them a few simple poses and encourage them to do the same. This improves motor skills and gives them an outlet for self-expression. Children who can express themselves often have less meltdowns.
Catch the fish
This activity is a great and imaginative way to practice letter identification and letter sounds while having lots of fun.
What you would need is pieces of different coloured paper cut into fish shapes. You need a fish for each letter of the alphabet. Write a letter (A-Z) in bold on each fish. Using a hot glue gun, attach a paper clip behind each fish.
Using a stick as a fishing rod, tie yarn to one edge of the stick and then attach a magnet to the other end of the yarn. Lay a blue cloth (sea) in the middle of the room and place the laundry basket (boat) in the middle. Spread the fish around the basket, get your kids in the boat, and start fishing!
Note: This activity needs close supervision. Please ensure that the magnet is firmly attached as any loose magnet is dangerous if swallowed.
