Detoxing is one of the wonderful results of practicing yoga. Toxin elimination begins during the practice from our breath, blood circulation, kidneys and liver. Detoxification continues after the practice when we shower and use the bathroom, and in how we replenish our fuel.

With yoga as a companion, here are some tricks to give your body an assist so it can perform its natural detoxing functions.

In a Nutshell

Yoga

In a well-rounded yoga practice, every part of the body is pushed, pulled, twisted, turned and upended facilitating the removal of waste products. An example of a yoga posture that stimulates toxin removal is seated spinal twist.

Breath

Much of the toxins is removed in exhaling carbon dioxide. A super detoxifying breath that anyone can do is ‘Bellows Breath’. Sitting in a comfortable position where you can sit up tall, rest your hands on your legs and relax. To prepare, inhale and exhale a few times always through the nose to even out and deepen breath. Finally, exhale completely, inhale half way and begin short exhale, exhale, exhale, actively pumping your stomach by drawing your navel inwards. The inhales will come organically. So concentrate on short bursts of exhales compressing the abdominals to push the air out. There is a little sound of exhale from your nose. Complete 30 - 50 times for three rounds. (If you have a heart condition or high blood pressure, you should not attempt this)

Cleansing

After sweating, we need to shower and this is another part of the detoxification process. Toxins can enter though the skin so be careful of the products you use - opt for organic natural cosmetics, toiletries and deodorants.

Food and Drink

Finally, you must refuel. The longer you practice, the more aware you will be. After your yoga practice, drink lots of water leaving out foods and drinks like alcohol, sugar, caffeine, fried foods and processed foods – eat foods as fresh as possible!

There you have it! Yoga for detox. I hope you try these techniques and I promise you will get noticeably glowing with a healthy radiance that all your friends will ask you for your secret.
