Fitness trends are transforming into increasingly diverse and dynamic routines that encompass all of any individual’s respective workout needs and requirements. If there was ever a time you wished to deviate from your regular fitness plan to try something new, the time is now.
From self-defence classes to sweat spas that detoxify, popular blogger Isabella Wong shares her experiences with us as she tried out new fitness classes to change up her routine.
Truth be told, I arrived to this class without any prior expectations in mind. We were greeted by Monarchy MMA Combat Fitness gym’s in-house chief trainer Bruno Barbosa, who also specializes in the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. Bruno is also responsible for starting a major crowdfunding project that kick-started this fitness centre, that prides itself on high-performance MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) disciplines.
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) promotes the concept that a smaller person can successfully defend themselves from a larger, stronger adversary by using leverage and proper technique, before manoeuvring and executing various ground-fighting practices.
I quickly discovered that this principle indeed rings true, as technique was essential and the art itself involves a lot of body-to-body contact. Bruno demonstrated a variety of primary ground positions, joint-locks and chokeholds in order for the BJJ practitioner to subdue to their opponent. It was exhausting but still an insightful experience!
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is definitely a recommended discipline for men and women alike – it’s great for those who are keen on learning the ropes of self-defence, and it’s always a good thing to be prepared and be street-smart too!
No, Jump Street wasn’t inspired by the films featuring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill - it’s instead a sprawling, urban playground, filled with hundreds of interconnected trampolines! I had so much fun at Malaysia’s first trampoline park, and it’s no wonder why Jump Street has quickly become a trending destination for those looking for a unique, but equally thrilling way to have fun.
Before being allowed into the trampoline area, I had to purchase and don Jump Street’s special grip socks to minimize the risk of slipping. With ball pits, basketball hoops, jump pads and trampoline areas of all sizes scattered across the play area, there’s always a good opportunity to diversify your aerial acrobatics and reach new gravity-defying heights at Jump Street. Although ‘safety first’ is a firmly held principle at Jump Street, it certainly sent my adrenaline pulsing as I soared into new heights at Jump Street!
Although it was already tons of fun by myself, the Jump Street experience can be enhanced with great company – either with your friends or family in tow! Jump Street has concocted the perfect combination of burning calories, while having lots of fun at the same time, and it’s a great, exciting way to spend the day.
Sweatspa is a unique wellness spa that focuses exclusively on the potent benefits of Full Spectrum Infrared Sauna Therapy, and like its slogan implies, it’s really all about the sweat. Sweating is one of the simplest ways to attain health, beauty and vitality, and Sweatspa is perfect for those who are too busy to fit in an exercise schedule. Coupled with sweatspa’s medical-grade Infrared Sauna technology, it exists as one of the more effective ways to burn fat, detoxify and rid of harmful chemicals in the body.
Sweatspa was great for relaxing and unwinding after a long day! I was given my own private sauna booth and was even given the option to select the purposes of a particular setting- for instance ; weight loss, detox, cardio, and et cetera. There was even a small TV screen where I could go online and even access Facebook throughout my 45-minute long session. I came out feeling extremely refreshed and relaxed after detoxifying my body. Total bliss! As the recommended minimum is 3 sessions per week, I can see myself returning for more of Sweatspa in the near future.
It was time to amp up the intensity without losing out on the fun with Jazzercise! A fitness training program that combines aerobic exercise with jazz music, it was literally a full-on cardio blast that had me sweating in no time. Comprising of a fusion of dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga and kickboxing, Jazzercise was designed to be a workout for everyone regardless of age or fitness level, and there were many participants both young and old present. The routines were energetic, hard-hitting but still easy to follow for beginners like me. The hour-long session went by in a flash, and although I was quite breathless by the end of it, it is another great, fun alternative for burning those calories!
Led by Malaysian songbird Atilia Haron, Fuel Yoga was a yoga class that was held in a CrossFit studio. She established YogaOneThatIWant (YOTIW) Studios and is currently partnering with Fuel Athletics to bring yoga classes to more enthusiasts!
Admittedly, I’m not the most flexible of persons, but Atilia was a patient instructor as she took the time to explain each yoga position and to correct the participants’ form. Plus, we had a great view of the surrounding scenery outside throughout the session, which was vigorous yet calming. For those looking to achieve inner balance and to improve the strengths of their mind, body and soul, then Fuel Yoga is the workout for you.
