Chinese New Year is the time to get together with your friends and families. Often, we can be over-indulging with too much alcoholic or carbonated drinks. Excessive drinking may not only increase your risk of weight gain, but also putting the extra sugar and toxins in your body can harm your liver function and digestive system.
So, if you are looking for some pretty, cool but healthy drink to celebrate the season, here are few easy ideas for you that will impress your guests.
1) Fruit Infused Tea
Exotic fruit tea is enough to make anyone happy this season. Fruit infused tea is a mixture of black tea with a natural essence of fruit. The great thing about this recipe is that you can choose any fruits you have in your refrigerator whether its berries or citrus, they’re all super healthy and delicious, not to mention look very pretty too!
Amanda’s favourite choice: Orange, lemon (with skin on), kumquats, pineapple, apples, Korean pears with some rose petals.
Ingredients (serve 3-4 people):
- Fruits slices of your choice
- 2-3 red teabags
Place fruits and tea bags into a teapot, add hot water. Leave to simmer for 15-20 minutes. You may serve it warm. Fruit mixture may be reused several times until there is no longer any flavour left.
2) Strawberry Mint Cooler Infused Water
Forget sodas! You will love this non-alcoholic drink that taste almost like a Mojito and is super refreshing — definitely perfect during a hot summer day. Combining mint with lime juice and honey is beneficial to digestive disorders. Perfect after a big meal as it aids digestion and is soothing to the tummy.
1 cup fresh mint leave – slightly crushed
½ cup fresh lime juice
10 strawberries (cut into thin slices)
2 tbsp honey
In a 1 litre jar, add in water with all the ingredients and mix well. Let it sit in the fridge for 2 hours, then it is ready to serve.
3) Digestive Ginger Ale
If you love something more tangy and spicy, you'll love this ginger ale beverage. Ginger is also great for digestion which is great for those a bloated tummy due to poor digestion.
2 cups cold water
1 cup fresh lime juice
1½ cup chopped ginger, with skin on
¾ cup superfine organic sugar
3 cup sparkling water
A couple of lime slices
- Boil ginger in water in a small saucepan at a low simmer for 45 minutes. Remove from the heat and strain the mixture.
- Add in sugar and lime juice, mix well
- In a jar, pour in the mixture, and store it in the fridge.
- Add sparkling water just before serving and serve over ice. Garnish with lime slices, if desired.
4) Watermelon Punch
This is truly a thirst quencher which kids are going to love. Not only is this Watermelon Punch refreshing, it is also a healthy alternative to artificially sweetened drinks, because it is packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Plus, it is super hydrating!
1 oblong seedless watermelon (about 10 pounds)
1 cup of fresh lime juice, with some lime flesh
1 cup of fresh pineapple juice
- Cut the top of the watermelon off about 1/6 of the way down. Cut the bottom end to make sure the watermelon will stand on its own. Scoop out the flesh.
- Place watermelon flesh in an electric blender; process until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer; discard the solids.
- Pour the watermelon juice into a jar, add lime juice and pineapple juice and mix well.
- Transfer to watermelon bowl if you prefer to drink from the bowl.
- Served chilled over crushed ice. Give the watermelon punch a stir before you enjoy it to make sure all ingredients are combined.
