Healthy eating; two words that don’t exactly bring to mind a delicious spread of satisfying meals. For most people, eating healthily means having endless salads and bland, watery soup. While those seem to be the staple of those constantly on diets, eating healthily does not require you to have tasteless meals. And this is where Organica Lifestyle comes in.
Located in Bangsar, Organica Lifestyle is one of those gems that you get excited about discovering. Nestled in a quiet neighbourhood, it truly is the urban sanctuary that the founders, Shantini Iyngkaran and Anjana Arunachalam set out to create.
My co-traveller and bestie Anjana and I both had some health issues that we had to handle and through our personal journeys and the difficulties that we faced, we decided that we wanted to make a healthier lifestyle an easier option for other people.
Organica Lifestyle houses a café, a yoga studio and also a store for your organic needs. The two-storey house has a delightfully calming atmosphere and will have you immediately at ease.
"We realised that there was a deficiency in spaces that offered nourishing food and also healing environments. So we decided that we needed a place that would offer all this," explained Shantini.
The offerings on the menu will have you pleasantly surprised; from delicious salads to items that sound simply decadent, Organica Café will have you looking at eating healthily from a whole new perspective. From the Quinoa Lemak (yes, the healthier alternative to our local favourite!) to the Choc-maca pancakes, the Organica Café makes you wonder why you may have been so averse to healthy food. Nothing that tastes like cardboard or sawdust here! Those with specific dietary needs will find this café a delicious haven. And yes, of course the café offers salads, but scrumptious ones put together with creativity and with the consumers palate in mind.
Although both founders are very hands-on with Organica, Anjana is based in Australia. “Although Anjana is not here, she’s still very involved in everything. We’re constantly in touch and make decisions together,” explained Shantini.
Although the café currently has very limited seating, there are plans afoot to expand the dining area. And the café overlooks what will soon be their very own vegetable and herb garden. Gazing at greens while consuming your healthy meals will have you feeling very zen.
The café also offers delicious juice concoctions to go with your meals. Their cold-pressed juices are packed with nutrients and wonderfully refreshing. Made with fresh fruits and vegetables, the juices are not only good for you but also look pretty appealing with their deep and vibrant colours.
If you’ve had trouble sourcing for some organic staples, the Organica store will be a pleasant find for you. From organic items for your kitchen to organic skincare to supplements, the store will certainly have you browsing and leaving with a few things in your shopping bag. “We’d like to think of our store as an extension of our own pantry. And we stock our store with things that we would be happy to use ourselves,” said Shantini. Incidentally, Organica is the only supplier in Malaysia for some practitioner-grade nutraceuticals such as Metagenics and Thorne which one would usually have to order from abroad. And you can also brew some of your own deliciously warming chai by getting yourself a bag of the Melbourne–produced Chai Walli from the store.
The yoga studio upstairs is very spacious and has good natural lighting. Although it offers you the full view of the busy Jalan Maarof, it is still a tranquil space that’s perfect for yoga (or a quick savasana!).
While dining at Organica is not exactly cheap, it won’t burn a hole in your pocket either. And the price you pay is well-worth the quality of the food you get and the ambience. The same applies to the store; you can’t expect quality products without having to pay just a little extra. You’ll also have the pleasure of Shantini’s company or any member of the Organica family who are friendly and always ready to help with any queries you may have or just to chat.
The founders of Organica Lifestyle set out with the mission to educate, inform and nurture. Although it’s early days yet, they certainly seem to be on the right path.
