Here you build your own bowl, which comes in three sizes – Petit, Regular and Large. Start with a base (salad, quinoa, multi-grain rice, soba, whole wheat pasta) and protein (chicken, meatballs, fish, tofu), add on supplements and toppings and finish off with a dressing. Agrain’s supplement list is very varied and includes ingredients like Onsen egg, curried cauliflower, Mediterranean vegetables and herb roasted potatoes. Dressings veer between favourite Asian flavours like green curry and assam and familiar tastes like honey balsamic and pesto.

Pioneer salad bar, Salad Atelier, are one of the most popular salad purveyors in town with outlets spread across KL and PJ. Here you can choose to build your own salad or choose from a variety on the menu. Build-your-own salads come in three sizes – Baby, Adult and Monster. Portions here are generous and an Adult size is more than enough to get you through from lunch to dinner. All salads begin with a base and main, and depending on the size, you get to add supplementary and prime ingredients. There are many ingredients to choose from and even vegetarians and vegans have good options. If you don’t fancy a salad, choose to build-your-own sandwich or opt for menu items like the Quinoa Lemak Wrap or Soba Seafood Noodles. There’s also a selection of healthy juices and smoothies to supplement your meal.

A relative newcomer to the salad scene, Good Monster is a little different and specialises in rice bowls packed with healthy ingredients. The owners are very focused on introducing wholesome eating to the public and want to revolutionise Malaysian comfort food. By successfully melding popular local flavours (otak-otak, sambal ikan bilis, tempeh, kerabu, satay) with ingredients like seaweed, broccoli, cauliflower, edamame and avocado, their bowls are tasty, filling and most importantly good for you. Vegan, vegetarian, keto and low-carb options are readily available, and diners can also build their own bowls from the sizeable list of ingredients. Their sauce options do set them apart with unique choices like the Salted Egg Buttermilk Boba, Sambal Hijau and Sriracha Mayo.

If you’re in the Mont Kiara area and in need of a salad and all the goodness that goes with it, head to Rocket Kitchen at 163 Retail Park. The outlet itself is minimalist in nature while the menu has signature bowls and the build-your-own option. Signature bowls cover all protein sources with options like Zesty Salmon, Rocket Steak, Spicy Chicken and Rainbow Vegan. Salad bowls come in two sizes – Usual and Upsize – with combinations of a base, protein, supplement, toppings and dressing. There’s not a huge amount of choice but what Rocket Kitchen has done is tasty; from tempeh and turmeric chicken breast to grilled pineapple, corn salsa and braised red cabbage; and sometimes having a concise selection is preferable.

Named after that delicious Argentinian sauce made with garlic, parsley, olive oil, chilli flakes and vinegar; Chimi Churri is where the salad’s at in PJ. Located in Jaya One, this eatery focuses on well prepared healthy food using fresh ingredients free from preservatives and additives. All sauces are made from scratch with a choice of warm Asian flavours (rendang, sambal, lemongrass) and chilled options including salsas and Chimichurri. Choose from salad / rice bowl, sandwich (white, wholemeal, multi-grain) or wrap (wheat, wholemeal), then add a protein (beef, fish, chicken, vegetarian), fresh vegetables and/or warm fillings (cauliflower rice, mushy peas, sweet potato mash) and finish with their delish sauces.
