We shared five places for healthy eats in Bali earlier. Time for an update as PurelyB recently visited Ubud on a healthy gastronomic adventure. Here’s a round-up of five places to eat clean and enjoy wholesome, hearty meals the next time you’re there.

Clear Café

You’ll feel right at home in this large, airy, three-storey mecca. Choose the comfortable chairs or chill out on the cushions accompanied by soothing music, relaxing dim lights, friendly staff and beautifully presented food. The vegetarian and vegan-friendly menu is extensive and imaginative, serving a wide selection of juices, ice-blended drinks and vegan milkshakes, sandwiches/wraps, salads and a melting pot of meals. We had the Glittery Gold (orange citrus, sea salt, aloe and honey) and the Semangka (watermelon, pineapple and honey) which were both refreshing immune-boosters.

We took our palates on a tour, our highlights were the Spicy tuna rolls with avocado – nice, bite-sized sushis; Mesopotamia (falafel, tabbouleh, cucumber salad, tzatziki with saffron rice and a warm, homemade pita) – wholesome and absolutely satisfying; and Made (raw pizza with a flaxseed crust topped with sundried tomato marinara, cashew cheese, marinated seasonal vegetables, avocado and fresh herbs) – loved this dough-free version of the Italian favourite.

Temporary Location: Jln Campuhan (across the Antonio Blanco Museum)

Original Location: Jln Hanoman (projected to move back here in May 2016)

Juice Ja Café

We loved the laidback ambience that swept over us as we stepped in. A believer in the whole cycle concept, the owner uses ingredients grown in her own garden and serves the food on ceramic plates from her own line. The menu is super appetising with both vegetarian and meat options.

The sesame tofu and carrot salad was a nice twist in the salad-sphere – flavourful with every bite. We had the spinach, mushroom and feta crepe – a savoury delight, and the Fusilli Primavera – a generous portion filled with crunchy peppers. Both were winners in vegetarian-ville! For drinks, we had their Tropical Trio (mango, banana and papaya) and created our own juice with kale, mint, pineapple and apple. Simply scrumptious!

There is a little corner of organic foods, ingredients and natural personal care products that we highly recommend you take a look at. You’ll also find a delightful array of nut butters and jams made by the multi-talented owner.

Earth Café & Market

The café is located on the floor above the organic store. You can choose to sit on the long terrace overlooking the streets, get comfortable on a cushion or sit at the wooden tables. This organic, vegetarian restaurant takes everything that’s prepared and served to their customers seriously. Based on macrobiotic principles long-practised by the founder herself, their ingredients are organic, non-genetically modified, cooked using traditional methods with pure sea salt, spring water and stainless steel cookware. Their uber-extensive menu serves all-day breakfasts, salads, wraps, soups and platters with ethnic cuisine options. Raw, wheat- and gluten-free options are aplenty. Great choices of juices, smoothies, energy boosters and tonics.

Our cravings were satisfied with the Mediterranean platter, which comprised of hummus, tahini, baba ganoush, marinated eggplants, tabbouleh, Arabic salad, falafel balls, matbucha and pickled cabbage – this wholesome salver was superb, to say the least! The Great Hug-A-Lafel sandwich was incredibly satisfying constructed from chickpea coriander balls in pita breads with hummus, tahini, Arabic salad and pickled cabbage.

The local community can also come to Paradiso, their vegan cinema with blockbuster and family-friendly movie screenings, all while tucking into healthy and delicious meals. The store carries a wide range of organic foods, natural, chemical-free personal care and beauty products with exclusively-available items.

Alchemy

This breezy, raw, vegan café-store is filled with luscious and nourishing choices. The salad bar presented a create-your-own-salad option from an abundance of fresh and creative salad toppings and dressings. The juice and smoothie bar was teeming with delicious ‘pick-me’ selections.

Our huge bowl of salad was filled with leafy greens, raw pad thai, pomelos, spirulina gomasio with herb vinaigrette dressing - a delightful burst of flavours! We had to try their smoothie bowl – we picked watermelon, bananas, pitayas (dragon fruit), berries, mint leaves and pine nuts for ours – was yummy comfort food to start the day with! It went wonderfully well with the pitaya smoothie. We wished we had room for dessert, we’ll save that for our next visit!

And you won’t miss the shelves of organic foods, natural, chemical-free personal care and household products when you’re having some grub here.

Bali Buda

Bali Buda began back in 1994 with a passion to bring the best to the plates and homes of their customers. Perfect for a relaxed meal, the menu is an interesting mix of hearty, fusion fare; from healthy breakfasts, salads, raw, vegan options, light meals to mains and baked goodness. Wheat- and gluten-free options are available to complement the vegetarian and non-vegetarian selections. They strive to use organic and chemical-free ingredients, wherever possible.

Our pick for the day was the Chicken Burger with sweet potato fries and a Pineapple Goji Ball. The Spirulao (spirulina, honey, organic raw cacao and soy milk) was a nutritious and creamy beverage. The Lean Green Smoothie (apple, avocado, celery, kale, bee pollen and coconut water) was a refreshing pick-me-up.

The organic store is a hit with many of the customers drawn by the wide range of fresh produce, organic foods, natural, chemical-free personal care and household products.
