Did you know? More than 30% of Malaysians, including young children and seniors, go hungry every day and are not able to provide enough nourishments for their body to protect themselves against the COVID-19 virus.

Although we are all greatly affected by the pandemic in different ways; either physically, financially, socially or emotionally, it does not stop us Malaysians from finding ways to help and uplift one another in order to survive another day of the pandemic.

The people-led #WhiteFlagMovement in Malaysia emerged in June of this year in response to the overwhelming number of families who are struggling to meet basic needs amidst the pandemic. This movement has been flooded with love and support all over social media - businesses, NGOs and people from all over the country are coming together to help locate and distribute foods and other essentials to households signalling the white flag.

How we can help more families in need together

At PurelyB, we believe that kindness helps keep spirits bright during uncertain times. Since March 2020, PurelyB has been donating RM10 from every sale to support Covid relief & food-aid funds for marginalised families across Malaysia. Now, to further help improve the health and wellbeing of all Malaysians, we are running a special Merdeka campaign between 27 to 31 August 2021, and we’d love for you to join in.

For 5 days, we will donate 50% of all our profits to provide healthy & nutritious Food Aid Packages to over 100 lower income families within the B40 community. No matter what you purchase from us during these days, 50% will go directly to this cause. Our PurelyB Team will be personally curating and packing these healthy food care packages to ensure the best nutrition for these families and their overall health -”Food is Medicine!” - Hippocrates.

We are also partnering with health food company Savor of Life who will provide freshly cooked plant-based meals for each family, as well as Zer0Hunger who will help distribute these items to the community in need.

While we sometimes might feel that our small actions won't make a difference, every little thing each one of us do matters. Just RM60 would feed a family - and together we can help many.

Nourishing the body with healthy foods is more important now than ever

A strong and healthy body helps protect us against the spread of disease and lowers the severity of the infection. Therefore, the ideal food care packages should be nutritious, accessible and affordable at the same time. As the In-House Nutritionist at PurelyB, I've together with the team curated the optimal food aid packages full of wholesome foods. Here’s a little insight on what we chose and why we think they should be in every food aid package!

What’s in PurelyB’s Healthy Food Aid Package
package

  • Chopped tomatoes, canned corn and peas

  • Brown rice, organic instant oats, wholewheat bread

  • Dried anchovies and lentils

  • Cooking oil

  • Black tea, oat cookies, dates

  • Freshly cooked plant-based and vegan meals

Canned Fruit & Veggies: Canned fruits and vegetables can be a nutritious option when fresh produce isn’t available. The nutrients in canned corn and peas can be comparable to their fresh or frozen counterparts, and in some cases, may even be higher! This is because these fruits and vegetables were harvested at its peak freshness, ensuring the best flavor and nutrient retention. However, it is always best practice to remove the liquid from the can and rinse thoroughly to get rid of excess salt.

Complex Carbohydrates: Despite its bad reputation in the diet culture, carbohydrates are a must have in food aid packages. Carbs happen to be our body’s main and prefered source of energy - they help fuel our brain, kidneys, heart muscles, and central nervous system. Moreover, they contain essential nutrients such as fibre, which is important for optimal regulation of the bowel system.

Keep in mind that not all carbs are created equal. Complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, organic oats and wholewheat bread are less processed and still retain most of the fibre found naturally in the food. This gives them its distinctive nutty taste, slightly coarse texture and also its brown colour. (Fun fact: Wholewheat bread is also an excellent source of protein!)

Protein: Whether you’re a meat-lover or a vegetarian, having protein as part of your daily diet is crucial to maintain optimal physiological functions. Protein is required for building muscles, bones and skin; repairing any damaged tissues, helping carry oxygen throughout the body and so much more! For our food aid packages, we’ve got dried anchovies and lentils.

Dried anchovies are not only packed with nutrients, but also flavour! Besides being high in protein, they are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids - which is good for heart health, and is rich in calcium too - which is excellent for the bones!

For vegetarians, lentils are a great source of plant-based protein. When paired with wholegrains, they provide the same quality protein as meat! Lentils are so simple to prepare and can take on whatever flavours you add into it - it’s the perfect canvas for any dish!

Healthy Fats: Fats should make up at least 20% of our daily calorie intake, and the best type of fat to consume would be unsaturated fats like vegetable oil. Without fats, our body would be missing out on the essential Vitamins A, D, E and K. These vitamins are important for maintenance of bones and tissues, preventing night blindness and reducing oxidative stress within the cells.

Healthy Snacks: Now, we can’t make a food aid package without adding some sweet treats for the family, can we? Snacking provides us with a burst of energy that is needed in between our daily activities. So for snack time, we opted for chocolate oat cookies, dates and black tea.

Oat cookies are higher in fibre and lower in added sugar compared to other store bought cookies - and they taste delicious and keep the kids cheerful! Meanwhile, dates are full of potassium, fibre and complex carbs. Eating 3 of this superfood in the morning can provide enough energy to last the whole day! And lastly, we can’t forget the hot beverage - black tea. A standard cup of black tea contains fewer amounts of caffeine but can still provide a high level of mental alertness and energy.

We are all better when we care together

We really hope this initiative will help boost the wellbeing of these families in need, and we are continuously exploring ways to support local communities throughout this crisis. If you’d like to contribute to our campaign in other ways please reach out to us at [email protected]
