4 Tips From PurelyB’s Co-Founder On Mastering The Act Of Self-Care

13 March 2018

Being a woman means playing a number of roles in life. We’re wives, mothers, daughters, friends and we selflessly strive to care for our loved ones. But when does self-care come into play, and how does one practice self-care when time is not on our side?

This week on Let’sChat! we sit down with Stephanie Looi, co-founder and COO of PurelyB who shares her simple and effective tips on how we can implement self-care into our everyday lives.

Siew Ying Asks:

Hi Steph, between my job and managing a household with 2 young ones, it’s hard for me to find time for myself. And even when I do I have no energy left for anything. What are some of the ways for you to implement your self-care into your life as a busy working mother?

Steph Says:

With so much going on you have to take some time to take care of yourself. It might be tough, but prioritising self-care is something you should practice because it not only benefits you, but everyone else in your life.

When you prioritise self-care, you become the best version of yourself and you will perform better at your roles as a mother and at work.

Taking care of yourself on the inside and the outside is not as tough as you’d think! It will most probably only take about 5 minutes of your time. Here are some of my favourite self-care tips:

#1 Apple Cider Vinegar

This is one of my favourites. Apple cider vinegar has a whole list of benefits for this but the 3 I would stress are that it is — anti inflammatory, immunity boosting, and supports digestive health.

I’ve taken this for the past year and I hardly ever fall sick!

Directions: Mix 1 teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with 200ml of warm water

#2 Drink Water Before Coffee

If you’re a coffee lover like myself, make sure you drink water before you drink your beloved cup of coffee. I realised that drinking coffee on an empty stomach can be very damaging to the body because it has been fasting all night and need to rehydrate.

Directions: Drink 500ml-1L of warm water before coffee to start your day

#3 Coconut Oil For Hair Growth

Coconut oil is great because strengthens the hair and the scalp.

I went through hair loss in certain areas of my scalp and coconut oil has been the answer to my hair problems. The great thing about living in Asia is the natural resources, and coconut oil is something that you can literally get anywhere!

Directions: Rub a small 20c size amount of coconut oil into your hair to strengthen and encourage growth

*Note: If you’re allergic to coconut oil try argan oil as an alternative

#4 Essential Oils

I like to add essential oil into my moisturiser. My favourite essential oil is Frankincense as it can reduce the appearance of scars. Another favourite of mine is lavender — I add Lavender oil to my shampoo to soothe and distress. You can also use chamomile oil to for a better night’s sleep.

Directions: Add approximately 20 drops to 500ml of moisturiser

*Note: Check for allergies by doing a patch test

Now that you’ve heard from me, I hope that these 4 simple tips help you learn the simple art of self-care. Remember, self-care is the best kind of care, so don’t be afraid to pamper yourself!
