Dealing With Cellulite

Cellulite is inevitably one of the banes of every woman’s existence - it’s the cottage cheese-like appearance that renders glowing skin into a bumpy expanse. Your fellow sisters would probably share your pains when it comes to cellulite, as it affects 90% of women at some point in their lives!

However, don’t let your body confidence crumble away because of cellulite. Here’s a handy guide to understanding the science behind the unsightly ‘orange peel’, and how you can improve the appearance of your skin.

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite develops when fat deposits stretch against the vertical connective tissue and collagen fibres that’s underneath the skin, allowing the fat cells to bulge out. This causes the dimpled appearance associated with cellulite, which often appears on the hips, thighs, and tush.

Cellulite is hereditary; so genetics come into play when determining whether or not you’re likely to develop cellulite. Hormones, diet and lifestyle may also have a hand in cellulite formation. Cellulite tends to form in areas with the least circulation as well. But one of the biggest culprits is the accumulation of toxic wastes in the body.

Most of the industrial chemicals and pesticides we may come into contact with are lipophilic, which essentially means they mix well with fat. To avoid poisoning your system with these harmful substances, they are removed from the bloodstream by the body and stored in the fat. And guess what – the more toxicity in your blood, the more fat cells are generated to store them! In short – the cellulite peppering your skin are basically storage units for nasty, icky toxins.

Of course, the modern beauty industry has multiple solutions of varying degrees of effectiveness to banish cellulite. These creams and massages can only do so much, and most research has disproved their claims. The truth is that cellulite cannot be fully rid of, but there are a few things you can take note of to improve the appearance of your skin.

What Can You Do To Reduce It?

Watch Your Diet

One of the easiest ways for toxins to creep into your system undetected is through what you eat. Cut-down on artificial, refined-sugar and high-sodium foods, and switch the snacks and take-out for healthy, unprocessed fresh produce (such as more fruit and vegetables). The alkalinity of the fruits and vegetables magnetises to the acidic toxic matter in your cells and draws it out. Another way to flush out toxins is to drink tons of pure water. If you find just drinking plain water too bland, there’s always infused water to give your drink a little kick.

Be More Active

What better way to expel toxins than to sweat it out? Exercising more frequently helps to improve circulation, aside from a ton of other benefits. Even at the office, develop a habit to move around more to get the blood pumping – take the stairs, use a standing desk, have walking meetings – the changes don’t necessarily need to be huge, as long as you’re being more active than usual.

Strength training, like lunges and squats, also help to tighten and tone the muscle for firmer looking skin. If it’s any motivation to start Leg Day, this might be it!

Natural Body Scrub

Make an all-natural body scrub to help reduce the appearance of cellulite made from used coffee grounds! Skin brushing stimulates the lymphatic system, increasing the circulation of toxins for removal. The caffeine and antioxidants of the coffee grounds are touted to be able to reduce water retention and improve blood circulation.
