No more for just quenching your thirst with an ice cold lemonade, or to add a little zest in your cooking, lemons are taking over your beauty regime and here's why you absolutely need to give it a try. Not only is it cost effective and easy to get a hold of, it's natural and works like a charm - no chemicals required!

Acne Be Gone

Lemon juice is a godsend especially for those with acne and blackheads. The vitamins and nutrients that these little fruits provide have some amazing antibacterial and cleansing properties that help with clearing up all the impurities of the skin. It's as simple as cutting a slice and rubbing the juice into your skin, leaving it on until it dries and doing a quick rinse with just water. Do take into consideration that lemon has some acidic properties which could cause open scars and acne to sting.

Skin Brightener

Need to brighten scars and even out your skin tone? Lemons do just the trick! The citric acid that has vitamin C penetrates the skin easily and helps lighten the skin over time. It also helps boost collagen production and helps the skin heal faster. You can use lemon juice or even make your own mask of lemon, honey and oats if you're up for a little extra pampering as this combination is one that works together like a charm. The difference is almost immediate! For those with oily skin, lemon also helps with oil control and eliminates that extra shine.

You can also use this for your knees, elbows and underarms. Basically any part of your body you feel needs help with a little whitening. Not only does it bleach and whiten, it helps soften the skin, too.

Hair Health Help

Dandruff is a common problem, especially for those with an oily scalp. Squeeze some fresh lemon juice and apply it on your scalp. The acidity level helps balance out the pH which in turn eliminates dandruff from forming. Don't forget to rinse it off and apply a little bit of oil (we swear by coconut oil!) to keep your hair soft. Just two or three drops into your hand and massage it into your scalp. Do this on a regular basis and say goodbye to dandruff.

Lemons can also make your hair colour lighter, so if you're looking for a DIY and cheap bleaching alternative, using a lemon is the answer. Just apply it to the areas you'd like for the colour to fade, and then spend some time out in the sun. The rays of the sun and the lemon juice work together to create natural highlights.

Nail Strengthener

For those who have fairly weak nails, or even those who constantly do manicures (especially gel), chances are your nails are brittle and break easily. Mix some lemon juice with a little bit of olive oil to help strengthen your nails. The mixture of acid from the lemon and olive oil helps clean up any build-up, moisturises and hydrates the skin. This will also prevent your nails from turning yellow, too.

Lip Exfoliator

When all the juice has been used up, use the peels as a lip exfoliator. Add some raw sugar to the peel and gently scrub your lips to remove the dead skin. Once done, rinse with warm water and apply lip balm for super soft, smooth and supple lips.

Note: Using lemons can cause photosensitivity so do make sure that you slather on sunscreen!
