Love the energy boost sugary, fizzy sports drinks and sodas tend to provide, but not so much the energy crashes after? If your answer is ‘yes’, it’s time to take a leaf out of the books of 18th century American farmers and start guzzling down some good old-fashioned switchel.

This refreshingly tart drink was popular as an afternoon refreshment among farmers after toiling under the hot sun, and switchel was commonly known as ‘Haymaker’s Punch’ during the time. Switchel, also spelled as ‘switzel’, is being revitalized as a nourishing artisanal drink in certain parts of the United States today, and it’s not hard to see why.

Made with all-natural ingredients such as apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, fresh ginger, and sweetened with honey and diluted with water, switchel is lauded as a pure yet effective way of replenishing electrolytes, rehydrating the body while providing a boost in energy. Hence, switchel is a great alternative for quenching the thirst of those with a sweet tooth in a yummy, wholesome way. The drink is great for kids too – we had previously unveiled the harsh truth about chemically-added sugars and its detrimental effects on children, but the natural sweeteners found in honey gives your kids the sweetness they crave without the pains of the sugar rush after.

Switchel is also, essentially, a powerful health drink in its own right. Ginger not only adds a nice hint of spicy flavour, it is also a natural inflammation reducer. Both ginger and lemon juice may keep common colds at bay – ginger is often prescribed for relief of respiratory issues, while the Vitamin C found in lemon is a great antiviral agent. Apple cider vinegar is chock-full of healing compounds, vitamins and minerals that will do your body good; both inside and out.

Regardless of the weather, switchel is an easy-to-make, all-natural drink that is great for any occasion. Jump onto the switchel bandwagon by making your own today! Here’s our simple recipe to make your own delicious switchel.

Switchel (Makes 1 Serving = 250ml)

  • 1 cup water (250 ml)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon natural sweetener (raw organic honey/coconut syrup/molasses)
  • Mint leaves for serving

Combine all the ingredients into a glass and stir-well. Garnish with mint leaves and serve.

Note: You can also make this in advance and leave it to chill in the fridge for two hours or even overnight before serving.
