Milk kefir is a gift to our gut. The symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeasts has a strong health profile, benefitting the gut by acting as a natural probiotic thrice as good as yoghurt.

The fermented milk, which on its own tastes like milk soda to me (I love the natural flavours), is really an acquired taste. But the flavour can be manipulated and made into refreshing and healthful drinks by simply adding and blending ingredients to it. Here are a few of my favourites.

Plain Lassi Style

  • 300ml cold milk kefir
  • A good pinch of salt

Mix and blend. It’s tangy, salty and original.

Mango Lassi Style

  • 250ml cold milk kefir
  • A ripe, medium mango
  • Pinch of salt
  • Honey (optional)

Mix and blend. This version is a refreshing mango drink on a hot day.

Chocolate Shake

  • 300ml cold milk kefir
  • A teaspoon raw cacao powder
  • ½ to 1 teaspoon maca powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • Honey or agave nectar
  • A small ripe banana (optional)

Mix all and blend. My favourite A.M. perk-me-up drink.
