Some of you may be wondering how is muesli different from granola? While both are made with a mixture of oats, nuts, seeds and dried fruits and are healthy options, here’s where the difference lies: granola is baked and a sweetener and oil is often used to bind the ingredients together, producing clumps and clusters. Muesli is uncooked and has a loose texture. In terms of calories, muesli is a clear winner as it doesn’t contain any sweeteners or oils.

The best thing about muesli is that the mix is extremely customisable. The base is essentially rolled oats and then the rest is up to you, really – just add any combination of nuts, seeds or dried fruits, you can use whatever you have at home and you can easily accommodate to allergies.

This recipe packs a serious punch of healthy fats, omega 3s and proteins with plenty of nuts and seeds. Make a batch ahead of time. This can even be a fun weekend activity where your kids get to choose their favourite combination of ingredients and mix them all together! Cheers to happy and healthy breakfasts!

Ingredients (Makes 6 cups):

  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • ½ cup coconut flakes
  • ½ cup sunflower seeds
  • ½ cup chia seeds
  • ½ cup flax seeds
  • ½ cup chopped mixed nuts
  • ½ to 1 cup raisins/dried fruits

Method:

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Store in an airtight container.

Enjoy them hot or cold - with a bowl of milk (or try non-dairy milk like almond mylk), a dollop of Greek yoghurt and fresh fruits, make it like overnight oats or even sprinkle them over ice-cream!
