My ‘Warm Lemon Water’ Experiment

I love a challenge, especially when the result is promised to change my life for the better. The drinking of a glass of warm water every morning with half a squeezed lemon for a month seemed like a pretty simple task compared to some, so try it I did.

I haven’t stopped, and I’ve been doing it for 12 weeks now!

So, what is it all about? Well, a simple internet search will give you plenty of alleged health benefits. Here are a few I found:

  • Improved immunity due to the Vitamin C content, which is also great for fighting the common cold and other infections.
  • Better skin, helping with anything from acne to wrinkles based on the fact that it detoxifies blood and fights free radicals that can break down the collagen that keeps skin healthy.
  • Aiding of digestion and improved colon health – all linked to a reduction in bloating and discomfort.
  • Potential assistance in longer term weight loss based on appetite suppression from the pectin, a soluble dietary fibre.
  • Reduction of inflammation in joints from the dissolution of uric acid.
  • Improved liver health, from the strengthening of enzymes and flushing of toxins.

From my challenge, it’s impossible to report anything utterly definitive against any of these claims.  Whilst they all have science and a good dose of rational logic on their side, if such things were guaranteed then surely the whole world would be doing it, right?

For me though, even the possibility of any of these outcomes is a great reason to incorporate this drink into my daily routine and that is strengthened by the following DEFINITIVE positives that I did conclude:

  • It created a RITUAL that suits me perfectly.

I am one of the few people I know that has never really been that into tea or coffee. I’ve gone through phases of having both, but never really connecting with either. I guess in the long run, this is actually a good thing, but what it has meant is that I have no real morning ritual. This lemon water trial has given me “something”. I have got into a rhythm of halving a lemon and storing the other half, then, of boiling the kettle and adding it to two thirds of cold water. This is now what I do. It’s saved to autopilot and I’ve begun to do it without really thinking. I’m happy about this.

  • It actually TASTES really nice.

This was a surprising bonus to me. When I began the challenge, I expected a punitive element and that the taste would be a little unpleasant. This wasn’t the case. I found that I actually enjoyed warm lemon water and I enjoyed it more than any other drink I’ve tried at breakfast time. It’s much more interesting than plain water and less of an assault on the senses than tea or coffee.

  • It’s given me a habit that has upped my daily WATER INTAKE.

I’ve always found the concept of drinking 2 litres of fluids a day a bit of a tough one. With a lack of tea and coffee related rituals, I often genuinely forget to drink. Now I have one big glass within 10 minutes of waking up and it sets things in motion. And now I have developed a taste for citrus-infused water, I’m also including a soda water and squeezed lime in the afternoon. That’s another healthy ritual. Bonus!

  • I feel CLEAN and REFRESHED.

There is definitely something about the flavour of lemon that feels cleansing. It’s a completely different experience to coffee and a great kick-start to the day. There is something psychologically effective about something that tastes so pure and natural.

And so the point is, all the health claims of drinking warm lemon water if true, are just an added bonus. If even one of them works out then great and if none do, I’m still better off for it.

This challenge is now part of my life and I genuinely conclude, it’s an all round winner.
