The humble coconut is much revered for its many uses and benefits, in both health and beauty. The entire coconut can be used, and each part has its own purpose and usage; from husk, to the water, and the meat. Coconut milk however, is incredibly underrated and we're here to shed some light on why it's pretty amazing too! Packed with loads of health and beauty benefits, you're bound to want to give it a go. But first, here's what you need to know about it.
Coconut milk is not what you'd typically think milk is. It's actually the liquid that forms and is stored within the coconut meat itself, in mature coconuts. This substance is usually obtained when you blend coconut water with the meat itself, and then strain the pulpy meat to create a richer and thicker coconut milk. Though it has high saturated fat levels, the benefits of coconut milk cannot be dismissed. You may want to watch your intake though.
Constantly falling sick and need a remedy that could make all the difference? Coconut milk is said to contain capric acid which is packed with anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties, as well as lauric acid. This acid when consumed is converted into monolaurin which helps fight off diseases, bacteria and viruses.
Control Blood Sugar Levels
Coconut milk is a great way to control your blood sugar level as the fat content helps slow the rate of sugar being released into the bloodstream. Due to this, it helps control insulin levels and controls diabetes in the long run. Do however remember to eat healthy and exercise as well.
According to research, the fats in coconut milk help to control hunger pangs and the need to snack as it fills you up without actually making you gain weight, thanks to it being packed with MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides). Do however take into consideration the portions as too much of something can turn out to be a bad thing too. Consume in moderation and it'll definitely work in your benefit.
Hydrates The Body
Just like coconut water, coconut milk too helps with hydration. This helps with your digestive system as it nourishes the digestive lining with its healthy fats, helping your organs such as liver and kidneys function properly, and also helps with digestion and constipation.
Prevents Joint Inflammation
The MCTs in coconut milk help lower inflammation, and can help those with arthritis or other joint and muscle pains.
With all these benefits to reap, coconut milk is a definite must-try. You can opt to purchase them straight off the shelves of the supermarket and they usually come packed in cartons, but consuming it fresh is the best way to go about it. Not only will it taste more delicious, you can rest assured in knowing that there were no preservatives or chemicals added to give it a longer shelf life.
Make Your Own Coconut Milk
Making your own coconut milk is fairly simple and isn't time consuming. All you need to do is scoop the coconut meat out, rinse it and chop it into small chunks to make it easier to blend. Use a blender (as it works faster than doing it manually) and add coconut water, or water. Keep in mind you're looking to make it a thick liquid, so don't use too much. You can add as you go along. Once satisfied with the consistency, strain it to separate the pulp from the milk.
