Nutrition and Well-being during Covid-19 recovery - The Natural Route (Part 2)

In our previous article on Nutrition and Wellbeing during Covid-19 we wrote about Vitamins and Probiotics that help build our immunity. But what about “avoiding” certain foods? No one focuses on what “NOT” to eat and how to eat clean when you are infected with Covid-19 or even trying to prevent Covid-19 from infecting you. This is also crucial because with our hectic and stressful routine, we tend to just eat whatever that’s in front of us, or even worse, stress eat. Also, there is always a curiosity to “what if I have nuts but no orange..should I eat nuts? Will it affect my immunity?”

We at Purely B, asked our in house naturopath and natural health expert Amanda Teh to share her expertise on “building immunity during Covid-19 and nutrition for comorbidities” and here’s what we would like to share with you!


Foods to AVOID during Covid-19

Heat Stimulants such as Chilli or Hot Pepper, these foods are considered stimulants, which may improve the blood circulation and thus raise the body temperature. Do not take too much when you are suffering from high fever which may worsen your condition

Foods that can cause inflammation: Processed sugar, High fructose corn syrup, Deep fried Food, dairy, red meats.
These are the foods that can trigger inflammation in your body, and also lower down your immune system. Deep fried foods are also high in trans-fat that may drive inflammation. Sugar and dairy may actually irritate your mucus, and produce more phlegm.

Sanitizing Your Kitchen and Washing Vegetables and Fruits

Most of us have our vegetables and fruits delivered home and by the time it reaches us, the food can be infected. Not to forget, the pesticides and contaminants from the raw produce from being transferred inside during cutting or peeling. 

People are now even switching to vegetable washes, disinfecting liquids and detergents for fruits and vegetables rather than just washing in plain water. While many food scientists advise against the use of chemical based products due to the potential risk of residues and chemical buildup.

Keep the kitchen clean and safe: Sanitize and clean the countertop, cutting boards, and utensils after peeling produce and before cutting and chopping. This is to prevent contaminants from the raw produce from being transferred inside during cutting or peeling. 

Always sanitize the kitchen surfaces and utensils after handling your grocery.

Leafy green or fruits: Make sure you clean them with clean running water and scrub the fruits with a clean brush. Additionally, use baking soda for scrubbing.  You can choose to use natural vegetable washing formula, but make sure you rinse them thoroughly before storage.

Hard-skinned fruits and vegetables such as oranges, bananas, pumpkins, yams, potatoes, and cabbage, leave them in your garage area, with an open air area for a few days before consumption.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods

We have heard and read so much about green tea. But why is “green tea” important to consume and why is it so commonly talked about? What are the other types of foods that are crucial for us to consume during Covid-19 to improve our overall health?

Green tea is high in epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which inhibits inflammation by reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine production and damage to the fatty acids in your cell.  Powerful polyphenols found in green tea have been shown to positively impact a number of illnesses and conditions, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. 

Mushrooms, which are very rich in Vitamin D, selenium, copper, and all of the B vitamins, which helps to reduce inflammation. They also contain phenols and other antioxidants that provide anti-inflammatory protection.
