How Spicy Food May Extend Your Life

Spicy food has long been known for its health promoting properties. Chilli, for example, reduces inflammation, increases metabolism, strengthens the immune system and helps fight diseases through the Capsaicin that it contains.

Populations that have more spices in their diet have even shown to have less cases of cancer. The Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences has now also found that eating spicy food is linked to living a longer life.

Over a seven year period, the researchers observed the eating habits of 199,293 men and 288,082 women aged 30 to 79 years. They found that the ones who ate spicy food six to seven times a week had a 14% decrease in risk of mortality compared to the ones who ate spicy food less than once a week.

So what does this mean for you? If your stomach can take it, spice up your food!

  • Add some cinnamon into your coffee or smoothie
  • Give “chilli chocolate” a try
  • Brew some yummy ginger tea
  • Add some chilli or pepper to your soups, main dishes and even salads
  • Eat some delicious Indian or Malaysian curries (I found a really yummy salmon laksa at Marmalade Café at Bangsar Village)

Delicious Spicy Bliss Balls

  • 1 cup raisin
  • 1 cup dried pineapple
  • 1 cup almonds
  • 2cm fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cloves

Put all the ingredients into a food processor and blend till all ingredients stick nicely together, forming a dough-like mixture. Take a small teaspoon and roll the blended ingredients into small bite-sized balls then place them in the fridge. This dessert can last in the fridge for up to one week, but there’s a good chance that you’ll finish them all before then!
