Pink, red, crimson, fuchsia, magenta; whatever colour it is, the pomegranate has to be one of the top five best fruits. It is delicious, it is nutritious, it is pretty and it has such a nice little crunch to it once you get to the seeds. The downside to the pomegranate is that peeling it can be time-consuming and messy but we’re here to help with that. Here is a step-by-step on how to peel this complex fruit:
Step 1: Cut off the crown (the protruding end of the pomegranate)
Step 2: Slice the fruit into quarters from the crown to the stem.
Step 3: Fill a bowl with water. Take a piece of the fruit, submerge in water and remove the seeds from the membrane. The seeds will sink to the bottom.
Step 4: Scoop out the membrane pieces at the surface.
Step 5: Pour through a sieve. And voilà. No mess, no membrane (which has a rather bitter taste) stuck to the seeds and so much time saved.
Pomegranate is lovely eaten on its own. You can also add it to salads, or make it into a juice.
Studies have shown that pomegranate is effective against heart disease, high blood pressure, inflammation and some cancers. However, studies are still being conducted. What’s for sure is that pomegranate is a good source of fibre, vitamins A, C and E, and minerals such as iron, calcium, potassium, folic acid, niacin, thiamin, folates and ribofavin. It has a high content of antioxidants which helps to stimulate the white blood cells to neutralise toxins in the body. `
