Ancient Eastern philosophies, as well as Western psychology, believe all the experiences we go through from birth to adulthood are stored within our body. All the good, the bad and the ugly. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) is an alternative therapy that allows these stuck emotions to be released.
EFT is a combination of Chinese acupressure and modern psychology that involves light tapping on specific points known to be energy centres or meridians—a network where energy circulates. When doing so, you are literally tapping into your body’s energy and healing power.
Research has also shown that tapping sends a calming effect to the part of our brain responsible for fight or flight, known as the amygdala. So when we tap, we are retraining our brain to react differently to the external or internal stimuli that are bothering us. EFT is great for stress, anxiety, chronic physical pain and trauma release.
How does Emotional Freedom Technique work?
When we experience negative emotions, our body’s energy is disrupted. Prolonged disruption leads to ailments. Ailments also cause distress, which can keep us in this continuous loop of being unwell and unbalanced. Healing the body cannot be done by simply treating symptoms; we must look at the whole picture and consider the root cause, emotional casualties as well as physical symptoms.
The first step toward restoration is to balance the body’s energy disruption; this can be achieved through tapping. Tapping will rebalance energy to make sure nothing is uneven and there are no depletions. Sounds pretty straight forward, right? It is!
Here’s how to practice Emotional Freedom Technique
The basic technique requires you to focus on the negative emotion at hand: a fear or anxiety, a bad memory, an unresolved problem, or anything that is bothering you. While maintaining your mental focus on this issue, use your fingertips to tap five to seven times each on the body’s meridian points. Tapping on these meridian points while concentrating on accepting and resolving the negative emotion will access your body’s energy, restoring it to a balanced state.
It is recommended to use EFT as often as you like throughout the day and certainly multiple times a week at the very least. Begin with the most obvious negative emotion and take that through a round of the twelve points before moving to a separate emotion.
