Take a deep breath before reading this and ask yourself “What do you think is meditation?” and “What helps you heal?”  We are back to living a busy and hectic lifestyle with the endemic phase and people starting to go back to work, kids going to school and social life back to normal.

Meditation is for everyone! Even children should be encouraged to meditate but with guidance.

For me, meditation is simply being at peace. Being mindful about my surroundings and that leads to helping me heal mentally and physically. But “why” is it important to meditate and heal?

Meditation is a form of Healing

In the beginning of the article, I suggested taking a deep breath before further reading. How did you feel? Even for a split second did it ease your mind? Even if it did not, do not worry as the more you practice conscious breathing you will eventually feel at peace. Meditation is conscious breathing. Whether you sit in a safe and quiet place with your eyes closed or you are exercising or even cooking, your mind is free from pressure which eases tension and helps your body relax.

Healing on the other hand can be mental or physical. When you are under stress, anxiety or in chronic pain, meditative practices aid in reducing all of these. Meditation can also increase your tolerance for pain and change your perception of pain.

Meditation can result in many forms of healing - emotional, spiritual, mental and physical. The word healing comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “haelen” which means to make whole.

Meditation and the Brain

During meditation, the prefrontal cortex becomes more active. This part of your brain controls your attention, impulse, memory and cognitive flexibility. According to a study done by Harvard University, practising meditation for 8 weeks thickens the cerebral cortex areas associated with attention and emotional integration. “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have claimed that it also improves psychological and cognitive benefits throughout the day” says Sara Lazar, the study senior author.

There is no exact science as to how many minutes a day we should meditate but we should aim for at least 10 minutes a day. Keep in mind that for every individual the response is different so it is important to test out longer meditation periods at your own comfort if 10 minutes is not enough to feel the difference.

Meditation and Food

Yes! Meditation does have an effect on your diet. Mindfulness invites us to remove distractions and sit uninterrupted with our food and fellow diners. In doing so, we begin to take our time over a meal. In eating more slowly, we savour the flavours, the aromas, and the textures. We reconnect with our senses.I personally saw a shift in my diet when I started my day with meditation and then had breakfast or lunch. When you meditate, you become more mindful. More aware of your emotions, body and environment.

Our Pegaga / Gotu Kola drink is a healing adaptogenic herbal superfood blend composed of some of nature's most powerful herbs and fruits: Pegaga (gotu kola), turmeric leaf, papaya leaf, green apples and dates. It has been scientifically proven to ease mental fatigue, reduce anxiety whilst also helping to improve skin, digestion and detoxification and enhance brain function and memory.

All the above mental health benefits go hand in hand with meditation.
