What You Should Know About World Cancer Day
| Written by Bernice Neai
There’s another (more) prominent date in the month of February than Valentine's Day. Does the date February the 4th ring a bell? World Cancer Day, which falls on that date, is a global event to raise awareness on cancer to encourage its prevention, detection and treatment.
Why is World Cancer Day Important?
An alarming number of 14 million new cases and 8.2 million cancer-related deaths were reported in 2012. Closer to home, in Malaysia, cancer makes up for almost 30% of the country’s reported deaths, which makes it one of the top five causes of death in government and private hospitals.
World Cancer Day helps to bring people together in the fight against cancer by raising awareness and educating the people on this disease. In doing so and pressing governments, organisations and individuals all over the world to take actions, it aims to avoid millions of potentially preventable deaths.
The theme of World Cancer Day #WeCanICan
The tagline for World Cancer Day from 2016 - 2018 is “We Can, I Can”. It explains the need for everyone to step up and also empowering everyone to do their part in reducing the global burden of cancer. It also stresses the need for pubic participation in cancer prevention.
The three different programmes with the public in mind are:
- “We Can I Can - Kick Butts!” with the aim of educating the public on the harmful effects of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
- “We Can I Can - Eat Healthy” is on the benefits of practicing eating healthily, and more specifically, incorporating the rainbow diet which ensures that you get a wide range of protective and beneficial nutrients.
- “We Can I Can - Get Vaccinated” campaign, which raises awareness on cervical cancer, and the fact that 70% of cases can be prevented by simply getting the vaccination.
How can you get involved?
Use social media
Why not post for a good cause? Use your daily social media habit as a platform to spread the word; share your story, words of encouragement and even positive quotes. Raising awareness doesn’t need to be a big gesture – even little things can make an impact. So get on your social media platforms and use the hashtags #WeCanICan and #WorldCancerDay.
Wear Your Ribbon
Make awareness ribbons from purple ribbons and safety pins. It’s a small act to gain positive attention! Make sure to have extras to give out and spread the awareness to those around you.
