What is a sore throat?
A sore throat is a painful, burning or irritating sensation of the throat, that often worsens when you swallow or talk. The most common cause of sore throats is a viral infection from a common cold or flu.
Treating a sore throat is very dependant on the underlying cause. The common sore throat generally does not require any medication as symptoms will usually go away between 3-5 days. Painkillers are often prescribed to treat sore throats and while they mainly provide temporary pain relief, they do not treat the root cause and may give you some unwanted side effects.
Luckily there are various remedies that can be used at home to soothe a sore throat and promote healing. Simple home remedies such as gargling with sea salt water, chamomile tea, manuka honey, or even coconut oil can do wonders.
