Making waves across the world of wellness, you may have seen these gorgeous Rose Quartz rollers splashed across your Instagram feeds — but what are they, and can they really improve your skin?
We spoke to Nisa Zulkifli, Founder of speak, a primarily plant-based skincare brand that sells the Rose Quartz roller, to learn more about this swanky beauty tool (and how it differs to the Jade roller!)
Q. Tell us a little bit more about the Rose Quartz roller, what is it?
A. The Rose Quartz roller is a beauty tool made of the rose quartz gemstone. You use it by gently sweeping across the face — basically a paint roller for the skin. There are a variety of designs available – brass or silver handle, single or dual-ended, depending on the person’s needs and preferences.
Q. Where does the Rose Quartz roller originate from?
A. Using crystals to massage the face and body is not a new practice and has been around for centuries. There’s a lot of history behind this simple beauty tool practice.
“In an Egyptian legend, Isis used rose quartz to maintain her divine youth and beauty. It has been reported that facial masks made of rose quartz have been found in the tombs of ancient Egypt, and it is believed that the ancients felt rose quartz would keep their complexions clear and prevent wrinkles. Rose quartz was also revered by ancient Tibetan and Chinese cultures, and some believe that this stone has been used as a token of love as early as 600 BC.”
Q. What are some of the benefits of using the Rose Quartz roller?
A. A form of lymphatic facial massage, the Rose Quartz roller improves the flow of lymphatic fluid to reduce the appearance of puffiness and tiredness. Improving blood circulation to the face means there is more oxygen and nutrients to the skin and in turn, improved tone and skin elasticity.
The roller also helps products absorb better and penetrate more deeply into skin. And it’s perfect for de-stressing as it can relieve tension and relax muscles around the face.
Q. Does the Rose Quartz Roller help with anti-ageing?
A. The Rose Quartz roller will help your skin look and feel its natural best. The soothing motion of the roller helps to reduce tension stored in the face, melting away repetitive muscle contractions that can form wrinkles. By draining the lymphatic fluid away from the face, it can also help detox the skin. On top of all that, the roller improves blood flow to the top layer of the skin — better circulation will keep the skin toned and glowing!
Q. How does the Rose Quartz Roller differ to the Jade Roller?
A. Both are functionally similar in its purpose as a beauty tool. The gemstones however, have aesthetic and intrinsic differences:
Jade gemstone is known as the stone of eternal youth. It’s very popular in Chinese culture for its reported spiritual and medicinal properties, and it is used extensively in traditional chinese medicine.
Rose quartz gemstone is a healing crystal, radiating the energy of love. It opens up the heart chakra to foster self-love which in turn promotes love for others. It has a calming presence, helping to reduce stress and tension that might prevent us from being able to love fully.
Q. How do you use the Rose Quartz Roller and how often should you use it?
A. There are different ways of enjoying the roller:
- After applying your favourite serum, moisturiser or facial oil
- Roll over sheet masks for the essence to penetrate deeper
Tip: Put in the fridge for an extra cool feeling to wake up skin and depuff under-eye bags.
How to use the roller:- Begin rolling gently from the center of the face and outwards in one direction.
- Our rollers are double sided so the larger stone can be used for:
- Cheeks, nose and chin — sweep upwards and outwards towards the ears
- Forehead — from the center towards the ears.
- Jawline and neck — under the chin towards the ears, then down the neck towards the collarbone.
- Smaller stone for:
- Eyes — from inner corner of the eye along to ears.
Note: Use the weight of the roller to guide movement and take care not to tug at your skin. Lymph vessels on the face and neck are superficial and sit just under the skin so there is no need to apply a lot of pressure.
The roller can be used daily for 2–3 minutes. If being used for a longer duration of up to 10 minutes, reduce usage to 2–4 times a week.
Rose quartz is a non-porous stone so it doesn’t harbour bacteria but you’d want to make sure you’re not sweeping bacteria across your face from yesterday’s rolling session. Here’s what you need to do:
- Clean the roller regularly by wiping down daily with a damp cloth or washing with a gentle soap.
- Dry it completely before storing.
- Lubricate the joints with a vegetable oil like olive oil or sweet almond oil as needed.
Q. Is it suitable for those who have acne or sensitive skin?
A. Those with highly sensitive skin like eczema, rosacea can enjoy a cool roller from the fridge in short sessions, taking care not to overstimulate the skin. If you are experiencing a flare-up, increased circulation may stimulate more unwanted inflammation, so do take extra care and listen to your body.
Acne depends on severity. If it is not severe, make sure the roller is kept clean and used on a clean face. Cystic acne sufferers may also actually benefit from using the tool when used cool and applied gently onto inflamed spot to reduce redness.
Q. And lastly, how can you tell if your Rose Quartz Roller is real or if it is made from fake materials?
A. Rose quartz is a naturally occuring mineral so every stone is uniquely coloured from a light to a rich translucent pink. Look for rose quartz with irregular striations (marbling) that are not uniformly distributed. Using a magnifying glass, the surface should have white streaks with naturally occurring irregularities and sometimes darker carbon deposits. The weight of the roller should also be nice and solid.
