World Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4th to raise awareness of cancer and to support its prevention, detection and treatment. Led by The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the primary goal of World Cancer Day is to reduce illness and death caused by cancer and to encourage the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer. This day is observed by the United Nations.

World Cancer Day targets misinformation, raises awareness and reduces stigma. The day has seen many campaigns run all around the world, such as #NoHairSelfie, a global movement to have “hairticipants” shave their heads as a symbol of courage for those undergoing treatment - this and movements similar to these have taken the internet by storm.

So if you or your loved ones need some information regarding the prevention, detection, and care of cancer, we are here for you with plenty of resources. Firstly, here are some golden rules to live by. Next, let’s get through some important misconceptions:

  1. Artificial sweeteners cause cancer - as a general rule of thumb, it’s inconclusive to say that a single type of food can be the sole reason for cancer. But having said that, there have not been any studies that prove artificial sweeteners are safe, either. So if we were you, we’d stay away from sweeteners

  2. Cancer is contagious - No, it is not, however it can be spread between two people when there is an organ or tissue transplant involved

  3. Radiation from your phone causes cancer - phones do have radiation, but the low-frequency energy that is emitted does not damage genes

  4. Cancer is hereditary - Cancer is caused by harmful mutation of genes. But most cancers are caused by mutations that happen as a result of lifestyle or exposure to environmental factors

Ladies, we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again - early detection is key when it comes to breast cancer. Here is why.  Which means if you have not had a breast self-examination recently, do it today and here’s what you should be looking for. Also, there’s been a rumour about leftovers causing food-poisoning and cancer. If you’ve heard it and are wondering if it is true, read this article here.  And of course, we all love a good success story; here is one on surviving breast cancer.
