A Guide To Getting Your Career In Wellness Started

Have you launched into the New Year feeling less than enthralled with your current job? Do you dream of 2018 being the year that you finally start moving towards that fulfilling career in wellness? Experts in helping people build businesses and careers in wellness, Welltodo, share their top 5 tips for kickstarting that career.

Tip 1: Time To Get Some Direction!

We’ve heard it said; that vague goals equal vague results. And if you don’t know what you want, how are you going to get anywhere? Grab a pen and some paper, and jot down some answers to the following questions:

  1. Why am I interested in wellness?

  2. Which areas of wellness would I be suited to, and why?

  3. What is it about wellness that I love?

  4. What are my personal values?

  5. What type of company do I want to work for?

  6. Do their company values match mine? 

Tip 2: What Is Your Personal Brand?

Now that you have some direction and you’re clearer about the right next step, it's time to revamp your CV, develop a cover letter and enhance your social media pages i.e. your personal brand. Spend some time thinking about and writing down answers to the following:

  1. What is your WHY? We mean... why do you love wellness?

  2. Why do you live and breathe the industry?

  3. Put this into words and develop your personal elevator pitch.

  4. Importantly, develop your sense of belief that YOU CAN DO THIS and that a fulfilling career is out there waiting for you.

Tip 3: Take Action!

Now that you have some direction, an awesome CV and cover letter, developed your own personal elevator pitch AND you’re developing that belief in yourself, it's time to get active! Channel and focus all of that incredible energy into the sectors and job types that you know you are interested in and spend some time thinking about:

  1. Which companies you currently admire in the wellness industry? List at least 5 (more if you can!)

  2. Why would you like to work for those specific companies?

  3. Research and list 3 activities that this business is currently focused on (i.e have they just launched a new product? Do they have an event coming up?)

  4. Think about what you could bring to the table to advance their current initiatives.

Making considered and thoughtful applications to companies and brands that you believe in goes a long way in helping you to stand out. Additionally, develop your network, go to events, meet people — go for coffee with industry players, share your passion, and share how you can add value to a business. No one else is going to do this for you, so get out there! It’s time to TAKE ACTION!

Tip 4: Be More Mindful

Now that you have direction, have built your personal brand and have been busy taking action, it's important to stay on track. Be mindful of what your goal is and what you are aiming for. Spend some time thinking about the actions you are taking:

  1. Does your current approach align with the outcome you’re looking for? i.e. the more action you take, the more results you will see — are you putting in enough action?

  2. If you are not seeing the results you want, how can you adjust? Is it your attitude, your CV or your energy focus that needs some tweaking?

Don't let time go by and then realise that the last few weeks/months of effort were not well spent. Be aware, be mindful and stay on track!

Tip 5: Don’t Forget To Enjoy The Ride

Arguably the MOST important of all our tips, and the final one to keep you on course — make sure you enjoy the exciting journey of finding a fulfilling career in wellness! How ironic would it be if whilst searching for a career in wellness you became unwell? Take care of your physical, mental, spiritual and emotional health and don't be hard on yourself. Take some time to celebrate and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What have I already done to contribute to this journey?

  2. What feedback have you received so far from people you’ve met along the way? If you haven’t received any, are you asking often enough?

  3. Where can you demonstrate your persistence and positivity even further?

  4. Am I being kind to myself?
